Welcome to

The Transitional Times

This is your new moon update for August 2008.
Please feel free to forward this newsletter to those you think would appreciate it. Your feedback is always welcome.

New Moon Technical Details

This new moon/solar eclipse is occurring on Saturday, August 30th
at 3:58pm EDT at 07 Virgo 48’ (That’s 07 degrees Virgo 48’). This corresponds to the first decan, which is Virgo (Mercury) and the Sagittarius (Jupiter) dwad.
Decanates are the ten-degree divisions and the dwads are the two-and-a-half degree divisions of the zodiac. These more technical details add flavor to the understanding of the lunation point. For those of you who know your charts more deeply, this lunation point is involving 07 degrees 48’ of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) as well as 22 degrees 48’ of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn). If you have any sensitive chart points or planets near those degree areas, they will be triggered by this lunation. For more specifics, contact me personally to schedule some consultation time. With the new moon (new beginning) occurring on Saturday, August 30th, the first quarter (course correction) is on Sunday, September 7th, the full moon (culmination) occurs on Monday, September 15th, and the last quarter (review progress) is on Monday, September 22nd, 2008. Next month’s lunation then happens on Monday, September 29th, 2008.The Sabian symbol for this month is "First dancing instruction". The keyword mentioned by Marc Edmund Jones in his book, "The Sabian Symbols in Astrology" is "Assistance". He says, "When positive, the degree is achievement through a personal competence and a high gift for co-operation, and when negative, cheerful acceptance of ineptitude."

The Element/Quality Balance

The Element/Quality balance in a chart indicates something of what could be termed the underlying ‘tide of affairs’.The Elemental balance of the planets this month comes out like this: One planet in Fire signs, four planets in Earth, three planets in Air and one planet in Water signs. The Quality balance comes out as: Four planets in Cardinal signs, no planets in Fixed and five planets in Mutable signs.Well, this month we have a clear winner for the Quality/Element balance. It’s definitely the Mutable Earth sign (Virgo). Attention to the details and working hard on something will be on most peoples agenda this month. Find a way to be of real service to someone this month. The total lack of fire this month reflects the need for a more reasoned period rather than a more passionate one. VirgoVirgo is the Mutable Earth sign of the zodiac and so is mental, detailed, health minded, perfectionist, service oriented, over-giving and critical. Being the sign of the harvest, Virgo loves knowledge and learning and has an aptitude for languages and writing. As mental as they can be at times and prone to extremes of various sorts (all attributes of the Mutable quality in astrology) Virgo is also an Earth sign and so can be very practical and ‘down-to-earth’. The Earthy chemistry adds expectations to the mixture and this is exactly where Virgo can have problems. Expectations are a normal process of the thinking mind however unrealistic or unfulfilled expectations are at the root of resentment (Scorpio) and guilt (Capricorn) issues. For those of you with Virgo, Scorpio and/or Capricorn in your charts, this last point deserves some careful thought. As A WholeThe planet Saturn has been in Virgo now since September of last year. As of this date, he is at 11Virgo23’. Saturn, being of a more somber mood usually, takes twenty-five months to go through the sign of Virgo. With the lunation (new moon) this month being at 7Virgo48’ there is only 3 degrees 35’ between them. In astrology we call this a ‘conjunction’. The Sun, Moon and Saturn are all together in the sky right now. The Sun will take another three days to reach Saturn before it moves on. The moon will be exact with Saturn at 10:21pm tonight (8/30/08). As this is occurring at the new moon, it ‘colors’ the entire month. So, be more cautious and conservative this month. Be aware of your energy level and be sure to get enough rest. Saturn asks us to work hard as well, but he’s fair and will always reward one for the actual work performed.Of interest with the lunation and Saturn is also the proximity of the wonderful and supportive ‘trine’ (120 degrees apart) aspect to the planet Jupiter this month. Jupiter is currently at 12Capricorn39’ and is retrograde until September 8th. This configuration further supports the focus on accomplishment, work and organization this month. Just be aware of any expectations and be sure to check on their reality first.
Organization, re-organization, focus, work, and being of service are the keys for us all to be mindful of this month.

Mercury is About to Go Retrograde!

The planet Mercury appears to stop and move backwards in the sky on a regular basis. This motion is called, ‘retrograde’. Every planet except for the Sun and the Moon periodically go ‘retrograde’. When a planet, like Mercury, is retrograde it indicates that the earth and that planet are actually closer to each other in our respective orbits. Astrologically, planets that are retrograde are stronger and more internal in their natures. Mercury goes retrograde about three times per year on average and each time it is retrograde for about three weeks.Mercury will go retrograde from Wednesday, September 24th, 2008 at 3:17am EDT and will go direct again on Wednesday, October 15th at 4:06pm EDT.The following suggestions may prove helpful during these periods of the year.

Mercury Retrograde Dates

This time Mercury is retrograde from September 24th, 2008 until October 15th, 2008. The ‘shadow’ cycle extends these dates from Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 until Mercury goes retrograde on September 24th and then after Mercury goes direct on Wednesday, October 15th, the shadow cycle extends until Thursday, October 30th. This, we will all be glad to know, will be the last Mercury retrograde of 2008. The next Mercury retrograde will be from January 11th, 2009 until
February 1st, 2009.

The End of a Cycle Approaches

Many people are having relationship issues through this time. We can see this astrologically by the positions of both Mars and Venus. These two have a two year dance with each other…in other words its about two years for Mars and Venus to go around the zodiac and come together again. The last time they conjuncted (came together in the sky) was on October 25th, 2006 and the next time will be on September 11th, 2008. What this means is that currently we are in the ‘dying’ phase of the last two year ‘relationship cycle’. It’s time to finish off old business, clear the decks, go see a psychologist or relationship counselor, astrologer, or your favorite psychic for some relationship advise just now! J You could also have a direct talk with your significant ‘Other’ about whatever may not be working for you…just expect that they too have probably wanted to have a talk with you as well! For some this time will be the ending of a relationship and, of course, that’s not always an easy thing to do. It helps to know that this too shall pass. Everything has its cycle in the physical plane. If something had a beginning, it will have a certain lifespan, and then it dies, only to be reborn again at some future time.
Some of you will remember that I wrote about this Mars/Venus cycle in last month’s newsletter. I wanted to remind us all about this event this month as it is a difficult time for many and we now are most definitely in the last da
ys of this cycle.

Pluto In Capricorn

Pluto entered the sign of Capricorn on January 25th, 2008 at 10:44pm EST. Pluto moves very slowly. The last time Pluto entered Capricorn was in early January 1762 and continued in Capricorn until the spring of 1777. The time before that was from December 24th, 1515 until the end of 1534. So it’s been 246 years since Pluto has been in this area of the sky. This time, Pluto has returned into Sagittarius from mid-June until it re-enters Capricorn on November 26th this year, and then will continue to move through Capricorn until 2023 when it moves into Aquarius.Carl Jung once said, "We are born at a given moment, in a given place, and like vintage years of wine, we have the qualities of the year and of the season in which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything more." More advanced astrologers frequently remember various years because of significant planet movement. 2008 will be remembered as the year Pluto moved into (ingressed) Capricorn. This is a big change that’s underway, and certainly suggests a change in the management of power and facing questions regarding the power of management. This writer feels that especially regarding the movement of the outer planets, it’s often very valuable to also consider the ‘Heliocentric’ perspective (this is the perspective of the planets from the Sun). Most all astrologers only consider the ‘Geocentric’ positions of the planets (the perspective of the planets from the earth). From the earth’s point of view, planets seem to periodically go ‘retrograde’ or move backwards in the sky. For those living on planet earth…that’s us…this is a valuable consideration. The scientific community shifted to a heliocentric perspective starting with Copernicus (Nicolaus Copernicus 1473 -1543). In the heliocentric model of the solar system, the planets NEVER go retrograde. In the heliocentric system, Pluto entered Capricorn on July 21st, 2008 and continues moving through the sign until 2023. The significance of this is that the timing on various actions relating to Pluto’s movement may differ from case to case. There is no doubt that this event is significant and important. Part of the Western Tropical astrology reason for this is to be found in the importance of the Solstice and Equinox points as well as the mid-points of the Fixed signs of the zodiac (that’s 0 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn and 15 degrees of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius). These points have been considered ‘World Axis Points’ and significant planet action on these degrees tends to have world wide implications. The bottom line is that this will be a year to remember…and that’s not just because it’s a Presidential election year in the USA! J The fact that it is a Presidential election year increases its relative importance in the greater scheme of things.
Didn’t some Chinese guy bless/curse us by saying, "may you live in interesting times"??? Well, we’re now in the zone. Welcome to planet earth in interesting times! More on all this as th
e year goes by.

Cycles of Growth

Those of you born in December 1918, August 1920, September 1949 and November of 1978 are now experiencing your Saturn Return. Saturn returns to the position it was at your birth every 29.5 years. This is an important time of self-evaluation. Where have you come from and where are you heading? It’s time to review your life goals; this is a time of endings followed by new beginnings. Clean house on whatever level you need too. You're setting the tone for the next 7 years, so stay awake. Additionally, those of you born in January of 1949, December of 1960 and December of 1972 as well as November 1984 are experiencing your Jupiter return. Jupiter returns to the position it was at your birth every 12 years. This is the time when opportunity can come knocking, so be ready. This can be a time of expansion and growth, take advantage of it.
